| The Nature of our
Business We serve a very specialized community of radiation therapy
professionals: physicians, physicists, and dosimetrists numbering less than 10,000 people
in the U.S. Assisted by therapists, nurses, and clerical help, they cover the professional
needs for 1,500 therapy centers. The tightly-knit and special nature of this group
produces a high level of volatility of products and companies supplying this field. Over
the past 15 years, the number of companies with Therapy Planning Systems has ranged from
12 to 26, in spite of the fact that the U.S. market produces under $30M in annual revenues
with growth barely proportional to inflation. By failing to recognize the heavy level of support required for therapy planning computers, many companies and their products have had short-lived success. This community has turned away from product after product because of inadequate support. Another reason for short-lived products is the nature of its customers, seldom developing loyalty to any supplier and switching to new technology offered by new entries, diverting the field's limited resources from companies that lag in adapting new technologies. Reasons for failure to use new technologies include
Our Heritage After the closing of Artronix (PC-12), a St. Louis manufacturer of therapy planning and CT systems, a small group of their service engineers became the Service Department for ATC (Cleveland, Ohio) the owner of the RAD-8 product. In 1983 this group left ATC and incorporated as E.S.M. - a third-party service provider for RAD-8 and PC-12 products. Through the years, the support base was expanded to include Capintec and other systems. RAHD was established by E.S.M, Inc. in 1990 as a marketing division for a new RISC/UNIX system developed at the University of Utah under the direction of Dennis Leavitt, Ph.D. RAHD was named after the RAD-8, reflecting the close association of the company with this system, the Bentley-Milan roots of the physics used by Dr. Leavitt in his early development of treatment planning systems; plus the return of quality treatment planning systems that use processors from Digital Equipment Corporation. Our Corporate Philosophy support, Support, SUPPORT Our heritage provides the basis for our commitment to full support for all customers, regardless of the technology level of systems they use. This support is extended to provide cost-effective upgrade paths to new technology, ensuring that all customers may continue to benefit from the solid support they receive from RAHD. Internet, telephone, and over-night deliveries ensure efficient communications for our joint development projects in Salt Lake City and St. Louis. Dr. Leavitt provides physics direction and verification, and all software is clinically tested at the University of Utah. Experienced dosimetrists provide immediate feedback based upon real clinical needs. Our St. Louis team handles documentation, testing and regulatory affairs, provides engineering for the evolution of system hardware, interfacing of new peripherals, manufacturing, product verification/validation/testing, shipping, installation, field testing, and servicing by field engineers. On-site training plus telephone and modem support ensures that all customers derive maximum benefit from their systems. How our Product Evolves User input is continuously tracked, along with that from convention and site demonstrations. Potential changes are listed and prioritized to provide the greatest overall help to our users, in keeping with needs determined by market perceptions. The code for applications programs is written by computer science professionals who adhere to programming standards to produce quality software that is easily handled by non-computer professionals. Our Engineering Philosophy: Plan for Change Continuous evolution in technology is inevitable. We plan ahead to incorporate emerging technology that will improve the value of our product. To ensure the adaptability of our systems to new technology, we avoid proprietary approaches in software, computer components, and peripherals to prevent boxing ourselves and our users into non-upgradeable systems. Our professionally-produced software is modularized to avoid the use of imbedded routines, to allow rapid incorporation of new devices and features. Since our product was introduced in 1990, we have established an impressive record of "firsts" in our industry, while also providing upward compatibility. Earliest RAHD users can run the latest software, and now have cost-effective upgrade paths to full 64-bit AlphaTM technology to add the firepower for MultiDimensionalTM graphics. Our Marketing Philosophy PRESENT with INTEGRITY RAHD sells what we can deliver, and delivers as promised. To ensure accuracy and quality in sales presentations no distributors or sales reps are used - only full-time RAHD employees. We avoid market hype about the future, and sell the most clinically useful system available today. Our Planned Growth Each step in our growth is planned to ensure a continuous high level of support that insures leadership in not only new technology, quality physics, and ease of use - but also the high customer satisfaction needed for market leadership into the future. RAHD will be there to work with you for years to come: your Partner in PlanningTM. |
